Dublin Live Music - Streets

December 29, 2022

The night presents an amazing opportunity for artists to flourish. The artist in the link below signifies an example of the use of public spaces as a platform to showcase arts, music and culture in Ireland. The night was December 29 2023. One can view people moving in the background and engaging with the music as per their wishes. If 3 people are involved in the busy city centre (Grafton Street) at a point of time with part-time gigs; with collections based on donations. At the same time, it contributes to the aesthetic experiences of the people listening to such music. So, should we produce a guesstimate as to what could likely be the revenue generation by the artists? Despite the uncertainty in economic model, let's give it an attempt. An average performance could be for 10 minutes, with collections in multiple forms of cash or Revolut; if the number of people as seen in this video is approximately 50 and even 20% of them decide to donate; so taking 10 people contributing 10 Euros on average for a 10 minute gig. Should we extrapolate this to a 2-hour gig? Let's say the momentum is maintained and the artists keep varying the songs and provide melodious songs and variety; then for an hour this could translate to 60 Euros distributed among 3 people; i.e. 20 Euros each. The night offers an environment where people are relaxed and come to have a great time. When artists offer that, they essentially meet a need. Another conducive condition was that it was peak Christmas- New Year season when people are willing to spend much more willingly compared to other times of the year. Congregation of people also plays a crucial role; as spots need to be identified where such gigs can take place. More community driven solutions might be feasible where there is a tacit agreement between the artists, local authorities and venues to play on the streets.

What supports could be required for the artists? Maybe, they need a list of such spots in case they are not already aware. A collection of such spots and streamlining the collection process greatly simplifies the task with no minimum dues and a voluntary model of engagement. Could it further be that, artists in every town and city are provided with the lists and this industry is streamlined to perform on the streets and the community supports them? What else would the artists require? Ohh, does this translate into a question for further enquiry, especially those researching the night economy?
